More about this artwork

Renowned for his evocative portrayals of the natural world, Roelant Savery’s “A Lion Hunting Two Deer” is a sublime exhibition of both upheaval and the serene in nature. This captivating painting, crafted in the early 17th century, showcases Savery's meticulous detail and rich use of color. The composition is alive with drama and tension. At its center, a ferocious lion pounces from a rocky ledge onto a fallen tree trunk, its eyes fiercely fixed on two startled deer. These deer, with their elegant antlers and detailed, glistening coats, embody both the vulnerability and grace of creatures caught in the perilous dance of survival. The background stretches into a misty, lush landscape, with layers of trees and a gentle sky—a stark contrast to the intensity of the central interaction. This artwork not merely captures a moment of predatory action but also provides a window into the artist's profound connection and observation of wildlife dynamics. Savery's use of a circular canvas enhances the immediacy of the scene, drawing viewers into the centre of this natural confrontation.

Roelant Savery (or Roeland(t) Maertensz Saverij, or de Savery, or many variants) was a Flanders-born Dutch Golden Age painter.

Savery was born in Kortrijk. Like so many other artists, he belonged to an Anabaptist family that fled north from the Spanish-occupied Southern Netherlands when Roelant was about 4 years old and settled in Haarlem around 1585. He was taught painting by his older brother Jacob Savery (c. 1565 – 1603) and Hans Bol.
