More about this artwork

This striking artwork, created by Willem Pothast in circa 1898, is an advertisement for F. Korff & Co., a cocoa manufacturing company based in Amsterdam. The painting features two figures, dressed in traditional garb influenced by Renaissance European fashion, engaged in the act of sharing a drink. On the left, a woman in an elaborately adorned black dress and hat serves a cup and a pitcher labeled "Foseco" with a careful, almost ceremonial pose. To her right, a younger woman in a flowing, gold-highlighted white gown accepts the cup, embodying grace and elegance. The background is a delightful array of intricate patterns and lush botanical motifs, lending an air of opulence to the scene. Rich black and golden hues dominate the color scheme, while the stark contrast of white enhances the visual impact. At the bottom of the poster, in bold and eye-catching typography, the text “FOSECO WORDT KOUD GEDRONKEN” translates to "Foseco is drunk cold," suggesting that Foseco, presumably a cocoa-based beverage, is best enjoyed chilled.
