More about this artwork

This intricate ink drawing by Dutch artist Willem Pothast, created between 1887 and 1916, is a captivating representation of daily life from a bygone era. Entitled "Jongen en politieman op een straat" (Boy and Policeman on a Street), the artwork depicts a seemingly casual yet profound interaction between a young boy and a policeman in a historic urban setting. The scene is set under an elegantly arched stone gateway, adorned with intricate carvings and bas-reliefs, which adds a rich historical texture to the composition. The detailed stonework and hanging foliage suggest a location that is well-worn by time, possibly in an old part of a European city. The focal point of the drawing is the interaction between the boy and the policeman. The boy, dressed modestly, appears to be in mid-conversation with the officer, gesturing with one hand as he looks up inquisitively. The policeman, imposing in his uniform and helmet, stands with a lantern in one hand, the other held out towards the boy in a gesture that seems both authoritative and kind. This interaction may be a simple inquiry or a deeper exchange, leaving room for interpretation about the nature of their conversation.Willem Pothast has masterfully used light and shadow, alongside meticulous line work, to create a sense of depth and realism. The contrasts in the drawing guide the viewer’s eye across the various textures and elements of the composition, from the rough cobblestone pavement to the smooth, ornate masonry.
