More about this artwork

Welcome to our exhibit on Willem Pothast’s remarkable work, *Jongen met schoen en roede* (Boy with Shoe and Rod), created during the period from 1887 to 1916. This captivating ink illustration portrays a domestic scene rich in narrative and detail. In the painting, we observe an intriguing interaction between two figures within a classically decorated interior. A young boy stands earnestly in the center, presenting a shoe and a rod to a seated woman, likely his mother or a governess. The woman, who is absorbed in reading a large book that rests on her lap, turns her head towards the boy, her expression calm yet attentive to the boy’s apparent explanation or inquiry. The setting is detailed, featuring a ornate fireplace adorned with various decorative items such as vases and books, contributing to an ambiance of cultured living. The architecture and furniture suggest a comfortable, refined home environment typical of the period.Through his use of clear, precise lines and attention to textures and facial expressions, Pothast captures a moment of everyday life, perhaps highlighting themes of upbringing, discipline, or learning.
