More about this artwork

We are delighted to present a fascinating work by Émile Bernard, titled "Pont-Aven Seen from the Bois d’Amour," painted in 1892. This remarkable piece captures the quaint village of Pont-Aven, located in Brittany, France, viewed through the lush foliage of the Bois d’Amour. In this painting, Bernard employs a post-impressionist style, characterized by bold, expressive color and distinct brush strokes that structure the composition. The view is dominated by a foreground of vibrant pink and red fields, creating a striking contrast with the deep greens and yellows of the surrounding trees. The winding, cobblestone streets of Pont-Aven meander through the center, where the clustered, pastel-hued houses are nestled quaintly under tiled roofs.A notable large, dark tree trunk vertically bisects the left side of the canvas, serving as a visual anchor that adds depth and frames the village scene. This artistic choice beautifully juxtaposes the solidity and tranquility of nature against the bustling village life.Émile Bernard's "Pont-Aven Seen from the Bois d’Amour" invites viewers on a serene journey into a small corner of France during the late 19th century, celebrating both the natural beauty of the landscape and the charm of rural French architecture.

Émile Henri Bernard (28 April 1868 – 16 April 1941) was a French Post-Impressionist painter and writer, who had artistic friendships with Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Eugène Boch, and at a later time, Paul Cézanne. Most of his notable work was accomplished at a young age, in the years 1886 through 1897. He is also associated with Cloisonnism and Synthetism, two late 19th-century art movements. Less known is Bernard's literary work, comprising plays, poetry, and art criticism as well as art historical statements that contain first-hand information on the crucial period of modern art to which Bernard had contributed.
