More about this artwork

Albrecht Dürer, a towering figure in the Northern Renaissance, presents an intense and penetrating portrayal of Emperor Maximilian I in this distinguished painting. Known for his innovative contributions to both painting and printmaking, Dürer delicately balances realism and composition in the beautiful and precise rendering of the emperor. In "Portrait of Maximilian I," Dürer captures the regal bearing and thoughtful presence of the Habsburg ruler. Maximilian, adorned in a sumptuous fur-lined cloak over a rich, dark red gown, gazes out with a reflective and solemn expression. The life-like details in his countenance, such as the lines etched into his face and his somewhat weary eyes, suggest the depth of his experiences as a ruler deeply engaged with the complexities of early 16th-century European politics. The ensemble is completed with a large black hat, which lends an extra layer of dignity and stature. In his hand, he gently holds a pomegranate, a symbol rich with various interpretations including power, fertility, and eternal life, hinting at the emperor's own ambitions for legacy and longevity. The background of the painting features a vivid green, which not only contrasts with the deep tones of Maximilian’s attire but also highlights the gold imperial crest displayed above him. This crest, accompanied by a Latin inscription along the top, celebrates Maximilian's lineage, virtues, and his divine right to rule.Through this portrait, Dürer does not only document a historical figure but also conveys the weight of imperial responsibility and the human aspect of a ruler who impacted European history profoundly.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
