More about this artwork

""We are delighted to present a mesmerizing masterpiece from our collection, "Noah’s Ark" by the talented Dutch artist Roelant Savery, painted in 1620. A rich tableau of life and survival, this painting captures a crucial biblical moment with a panorama of nature and animals in vivid detail. In "Noah’s Ark," Savery showcases his prowess in landscape and animal painting. The scene is set against the backdrop of a looming mountain, possibly Mount Ararat, where Noah's Ark is said to have come to rest after the great flood. The ark itself is depicted in the middle distance, partially obscured by the lush, wild landscape that dominates the foreground. The painting is alive with a variety of animals, each rendered with careful attention to detail and realism. From the lions cuddling in the front center to the majestic white horses and the elephants in the background, each animal is portrayed in harmony with others, symbolizing hope and renewal. Birds flutter in the sky, while in the lower right corner, swans glide peacefully on a small pond.Adding a human element to this divine narrative, an elderly Noah kneels in the right foreground, seemingly in prayer or thanksgiving. His figure serves as a poignant reminder of humanity’s role and responsibilities within the natural world.Savery's "Noah’s Ark" is not only a celebration of divine protection and mercy but also an exquisite display of biodiversity, encouraging viewer contemplation on the sanctity of life in all forms. This artwork invites audiences to delve into the rich textures of the natural world and to reflect on their own place within it.

Roelant Savery (or Roeland(t) Maertensz Saverij, or de Savery, or many variants) was a Flanders-born Dutch Golden Age painter.

Savery was born in Kortrijk. Like so many other artists, he belonged to an Anabaptist family that fled north from the Spanish-occupied Southern Netherlands when Roelant was about 4 years old and settled in Haarlem around 1585. He was taught painting by his older brother Jacob Savery (c. 1565 – 1603) and Hans Bol.
