More about this artwork

Presenting Jehan Georges Vibert’s striking painting, "A Night Class" (c. 1881), a compelling tableau that invites viewers into a dimly lit classroom scene infused with drama and curiosity. The setting is dominated by a central figure, a lecturer, who appears enthusiastic and animated as he performs or speaks in front of his audience. His attire, a vibrant red robe contrasted with a dark scholarly cap, immediately draws attention, creating a vivid focal point against the shadowy backdrop. The classroom itself appears traditional, populated by students of various ages and expressions of keen interest or tired amusement. The presence of several younger and older students suggests a community lecture or a special night class scenario where attendees range from eager learners to possibly weary listeners. Each face in the crowd is illuminated subtly by the light, which hangs from above, focusing on their distinct reactions to the lecture.Foreground details include scientific apparatuses, books, and ink pots, hinting at the academic or scientific nature of the class. The chalky billows of smoke or vapor rising in the background might suggest a demonstration or experiment is taking part during the lecture, adding an element of mystery and engagement to the scene.Vibert's use of light and shadow not only enhances the mood of the painting but also directs the viewer's attention methodically through the composition, from the striking lecturer to the absorbed or distracted audience.

Jehan Georges Vibert or Jean Georges Vibert was a French academic painter.

He was born in Paris, the son of engraver and publisher Théodore Vibert, and grandson of the influential rose-breeder Jean-Pierre Vibert. He began his artistic training at a young age under the instruction of his maternal grandfather, engraver Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet. Vibert was more interested in painting than engraving and entered the studio of Félix-Joseph Barrias and eventually the École des Beaux-Arts when he was sixteen. He remained at the École for six years under the instruction of historic painter François-Edouard Picot.
