More about this artwork

The delightful illustration titled "Jourdain im Hauskleid und im Fechtanzug" by Ernst Stern, created in 1912, presents an engaging double portrait of the same character shown in two contrasting types of attire: domestic wear and a fencing suit. In this artwork, we see Monsieur Jourdain, a character from Molière's play, "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme."On the left, Monsieur Jourdain is in his "Hauskleid," or house attire. He is whimsically dressed in a voluminous and elaborately detailed outfit, complete with frills and decorative ribbons, capturing the essence of an affluent yet somewhat pompous bourgeois gentleman indulging in the comfort of his own home. His facial expression and the posture of his hands suggest a manner of ease and casual engagement, perhaps in a light-hearted conversation. In contrast, the figure on the right shows Jourdain in his "Fechtanzug," or fencing suit. Here, he is equipped with a fencing sword and wears a snugly fitted outfit designed for the sport, still maintaining a note of flamboyance with similar frills and ribbons as his domestic costume. His back is turned to the viewer, suggesting action or movement, ready to engage in a bout of fencing. This illustration not only showcases Stern's skill in depicting character and attire with a comedic flair but also cleverly comments on the dualities of personal identity depending on social settings and activities. The use of soft colors complements the playful and light-hearted nature of the subject, inviting viewers to reflect on the societal roles we all play.

Ernst Stern (1 April 1876 – 28 August 1954) was a Romanian-German scenic designer who, through his collaborations with most of the prominent German directors of the early 20th century, helped define the aesthetic of expressionism in both the theatre and the cinema.
