More about this artwork

We are pleased to feature "Nikoline", a captivating painting by Ernst Stern, created in 1912. This elegant artwork provides a snapshot of traditional attire through the depiction of a female figure, dressed in early 20th-century European folk costume. The painting is vibrant yet subtle, characterized by its refined use of color and attention to detail.Nikoline stands in a poised posture, her gaze slightly turned and her expression serene. She wears a layered outfit; a dark brown jacket with detailed buttons and trim over a light blouse, and a blue apron over a white skirt, which hints at practicality mixed with style. Accessories such as a necklace and a headscarf complement her attire, adding authenticity and depth to Stern’s portrayal of this character. The choice of colors—earthy browns, calming blues, and pristine whites—along with the careful line work, highlights Stern's skill in bringing out both the personality of the subject and the textures of her clothing. This painting not only showcases the artist’s precision in portraiture and costume design but also offers a glimpse into the cultural attire of the period."Nikoline" is a testament to Ernst Stern's talent in capturing the essence of his subjects, making them timeless yet reminiscent of their specific eras.

Ernst Stern (1 April 1876 – 28 August 1954) was a Romanian-German scenic designer who, through his collaborations with most of the prominent German directors of the early 20th century, helped define the aesthetic of expressionism in both the theatre and the cinema.
