More about this artwork

"And The Prayer Of Faith Shall Save The Sick" by John Frederick Lewis is an evocatively detailed painting that immerses viewers in a vividly depicted scene rooted in 19th-century Orientalism. This artwork illustrates a thoughtful moment within a luxurious domestic setting, possibly within a Middle Eastern context given the architectural and decorative motifs. The scene centers on a group of figures gathered in a richly adorned courtyard. In the foreground, an elderly man wearing a white turban and a striking blue robe is absorbed in reading a book, which appears to be a focal point for the gathering. This character, along with others in the painting, seem to embody roles that bridge generations and social structures, from the young to the old, and from male to female participants.Adjacent to the reading man, a woman draped in colorful attire sits on an intricately patterned rug, attentively listening. Her posture and gaze suggest a deep engagement with the words being recited. Elsewhere, younger figures appear more relaxed or curious, adding a dynamic element to the composition.Lewis's work is known for its meticulous attention to detail, from the textures of the fabrics to the floral patterns scattered throughout the scene. The architecture features arches and detailed mosaic work that enrich the visual depth and authenticity of the setting. This painting not only showcases Lewis's skill in rendering intricate details and creating atmospheric depth but also captures a moment that seems frozen in time—where faith, tradition, and communal bonds are interwoven in everyday life.

John Frederick Lewis was an English Orientalist painter. He specialized in Oriental and Mediterranean scenes in detailed watercolour or oils, very often repeating the same composition in a version in each medium. He lived for several years in a traditional mansion in Cairo, and after his return to England in 1851 he specialized in highly detailed works showing both realistic genre scenes of Middle Eastern life and more idealized scenes in upper class Egyptian interiors with little apparent Western influence.
