More about this artwork

John Frederick Lewis, a renowned Orientalist artist of the 19th century, captures the striking portrait of Mehmet Ali Pasha in this intriguing study from c. 1844. This piece exemplifies Lewis’s meticulous attention to detail and his fascination with Middle Eastern culture and characters. In this painting, we see Mehmet Ali Pasha, depicted with a profound sense of dignity and depth. His visage is characterized by a furrowed brow and deep-set eyes that convey a weathered wisdom. The Pasha's attire is traditional and vividly colored; he wears a tarboosh (fez) with a dark blue, red, and white pattern, suggesting his high rank and status. The grayish-white beard and mustache contrast starkly with the deep colors of his headgear, highlighting the aged yet resilient features of his face. The background of the artwork, though subdued and sketchlike, serves to bring the viewer's focus sharply on the subject. The apparent unfinished state of the painting, with the lower part of the figure merely outlined, adds a layer of intrigue and invites the viewer to contemplate the artist's process. This study is not just an artistic representation but also a cultural artifact, encapsulating the essence of a significant historical figure in Ottoman Egypt.

John Frederick Lewis was an English Orientalist painter. He specialized in Oriental and Mediterranean scenes in detailed watercolour or oils, very often repeating the same composition in a version in each medium. He lived for several years in a traditional mansion in Cairo, and after his return to England in 1851 he specialized in highly detailed works showing both realistic genre scenes of Middle Eastern life and more idealized scenes in upper class Egyptian interiors with little apparent Western influence.
