More about this artwork

In the intriguing painting "Lula and Alva Schön (1918)" by Charles Demuth, we are welcomed into a compelling scene filled with rich, earthy tones and a delicate interplay of shapes and shadows. This masterpiece, executed through the medium of watercolor, encapsulates a moment of intimate connection and enigmatic poise between two figures. The composition of the painting is centered on two subjects, elegantly entangled in an undefined space that blurs the boundary between reality and abstraction. On the left, a figure is seen leaning back, adorned with a hat shading their eyes, evoking a sense of relaxation or perhaps introspection. Next to them, another figure stretches across the canvas, interacting closely while contributing to a harmonious dance of forms and colors. The background and surroundings of the figures are minimally defined yet rich in textural detail, allowing the viewer’s focus to remain on the interaction of the subjects. A nearby table with scattered objects suggests a casual, lived-in setting, enhancing the snapshot quality of the piece. The subtle incorporation of text - "I am not that the diver ..." and "Be stille Be stille" - floating amidst the forms, adds a lyrical quality to the work, inviting viewers to ponder the narrative or emotional context of the interaction.Charles Demuth's "Lula and Alva Schön" is a fine example of his skill in capturing the essence of a moment and the complexity of human connections through his distinctive, softened geometric style.

Charles Demuth (1883-1935) was one of the leading artists during the American Modernism era. He was distinguished for intimate watercolors and cubic architectural paintings. Demuth studied art at Académie Julian in Paris, where he was welcomed into the avant-garde art scene and met other American Cubism artists like Marsden Hartley. His watercolor figures have a weightless and surrealistic character with a sensitive linear style, in which he illustrated plays and novels such as Émile Zola's Nana. He also depicted an evolving gay scene of encounters at bath houses through watercolors for his close friends, like the "Turkish Bath", works that now are of great historical significance. Demuth later employed a cubist technique by painting industrial factories with complex structural planes, leading him to becoming a pioneer for the precisionist movement.
