More about this artwork

Charles Demuth's captivating watercolor painting from 1915, titled “Nana Visiting her Friend Satin,” invites the viewer into an intimate, delicate moment between two figures. Rendered with Demuth’s signature precision and attention to the fluidity of watercolors, the artwork presents a scene filled with soft, warm hues and subtle interactions. The painting features one figure, presumably Nana, positioned dominantly as she leans towards her friend with a gentle, yet lively gesture, indicating movement and expressiveness in their encounter. Her attire, a deep blue dress adorned with thoughtful detailing, complements her dynamic posture. The other figure, Satin, reclines gracefully, her form sketched with delicate lines that suggest both restfulness and attentiveness towards Nana.Their surroundings, though lightly defined, suggest a cozy, private space, with elements like a brown chair and hints of an indoor setting enhancing the personal and warm atmosphere. Demuth’s use of watercolor lends an ethereal quality to the scene, blurring lines and merging colors in a way that seems to unify the figures with their environment. This intriguing depiction not only showcases Demuth’s skills in watercolor but also offers an evocative peek into the characters’ story, leaving much to the imagination about their relationship and the nature of their conversation.

Charles Demuth (1883-1935) was one of the leading artists during the American Modernism era. He was distinguished for intimate watercolors and cubic architectural paintings. Demuth studied art at Académie Julian in Paris, where he was welcomed into the avant-garde art scene and met other American Cubism artists like Marsden Hartley. His watercolor figures have a weightless and surrealistic character with a sensitive linear style, in which he illustrated plays and novels such as Émile Zola's Nana. He also depicted an evolving gay scene of encounters at bath houses through watercolors for his close friends, like the "Turkish Bath", works that now are of great historical significance. Demuth later employed a cubist technique by painting industrial factories with complex structural planes, leading him to becoming a pioneer for the precisionist movement.
