More about this artwork

This artwork by Albrecht Dürer, titled "Knob with Heart-Shaped Center," is a detailed and intricate piece that highlights Dürer's skill in printmaking and design. The image primarily features an elaborate, geometric maze-like pattern within a circular form, serving as a kind of ornamental knot. This complex knot design is symmetrical and beautifully detailed, showcasing Dürer's precision and ability to create a sense of depth and texture through black and white contrasts. At the center of this circular knot, there is a distinctive, upside-down heart-shaped figure that seems to anchor the composition. This heart shape adds an element of softness and familiarity amidst the stark geometric patterns surrounding it.Surrounding the main circular design are four leaf-like adornments placed at the cardinal points—north, south, east, and west. Each of these embellishments carries a cross at its core, suggesting a symbolic or possibly religious significance, which is common in Dürer's work given the period’s emphasis on Christian iconography. The overall presentation, including the tiny but detailed curls and flourishes in black against the white background, gives the piece a refined and balanced aesthetic, typical of Dürer's art. The design is meticulously framed, creating a window into a captivating, almost architectural visual experience. Such pieces often reflected Dürer's interest in mathematics, symmetry, and the natural world, tying in his broader explorations of art, science, and spirituality.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
