More about this artwork

The captivating painting titled "The Good Shepherd" by Bartolomé Estebán Murillo, painted circa 1675-1682, showcases the artist's adept skill in rendering soft, ethereal atmospheres and tender human expressions. This artwork beautifully depicts a young shepherd boy, absorbed in a celestial light that seems to emanate from above, gently guiding and caring for his flock.Donning a rustic, loosely fitted robe with a rich purple tone that suggests a regal bearing beneath his humble occupation, the boy looks skyward, possibly in spiritual contemplation or in search of divine guidance, creating a strong sense of piety and devotion that is characteristic of Murillo's religious compositions. His face is rendered with a glow, highlighting his innocence and the purity associated with his role as the shepherd. Complementing this are the sheep around him, depicted with an impressive level of detail and realism, symbolizing fidelity and the pastoral care central to the theme.Set against a serene landscape that fades into a softly illuminated sky, the painting is a testament to Murillo's mastery in capturing the interplay of light and texture, as well as his ability to convey profound religious narratives through art.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (December 1617, January 1, 1618 – April 3, 1682) was a Spanish Baroque painter. Although he is best known for his religious works, Murillo also produced a considerable number of paintings of contemporary women and children. These lively realistic portraits of flower girls, street urchins, and beggars constitute an extensive and appealing record of the everyday life of his times. He also painted two self-portraits, one in the Frick Collection portraying him in his 30s, and one in London's National Gallery portraying him about 20 years later. In 2017–18, the two museums held an exhibition of them.
