More about this artwork

** One of Petrus van der Velden's evocative works, "Dutch Policeman," offers a compelling glimpse into the artist's skill in capturing the essence of his subjects through a distinctly moody atmosphere. This painting, executed primarily in muted browns and grays, portrays a solitary figure enshrouded in a flowing dark cloak and a distinguished uniform. The policeman stands prominently at the center, depicted with a sense of weight and presence that anchors the composition. His attire, including a distinguished helmet adorned with a bright red emblem, speaks to his authority and the formal nature of his role. The dark and loose brushstrokes give the work a raw, unfinished quality that communicates a moment caught in time, possibly reflecting on the solemn responsibilities that his profession entails. The background is abstract and minimalistic, with vague forms and soft washes of color that suggest an urban setting without detracting from the central figure. This subtle backdrop allows viewers to focus on the policeman’s introspective demeanor and the textures of his uniform and cloak."Petrus van der Velden's 'Dutch Policeman' is a captivating study of character and mood, demonstrating the artist’s fascination with the human condition and his mastery of light and shadow in expressing psychological depth.

Petrus van der Velden, who is also known as Paulus van der Velden, was a Dutch artist who spent much of his later career in New Zealand.

Petrus van der Velden was born in Rotterdam; his parents were Jacoba van Essel and Joannes van der Velden, a warehouse manager. Petrus began drawing lessons at around the age of 13 and subsequently apprenticed as a lithographer. In 1858 he founded a lithographic printing company in Rotterdam with business partner J. G. Zijderman.
