More about this artwork

"Old Mariner," a compelling painting by Petrus van der Velden, captures the essence of a seasoned sailor lost in his reveries. The exquisite wash technique used by the artist brings to life the deep contemplation and rugged individuality of the mariner.Seated against an atmospheric backdrop, the mariner appears absorbed by his surroundings, his back turned to the viewer, drawing attention to the unseen mysteries evoked by his gaze. Displayed prominently at his side is a ship, skillfully sketched, which perhaps echoes tales of his past voyages or symbolizes his enduring connection to the sea.The monochromatic palette masterfully utilized in this artwork not only highlights the play of light and shadow but also mirrors the solitary nature of the mariner’s life. Intricately blended shades create a dynamic contrast that breathes life into this thought-provoking scene, inviting viewers to ponder over the sailor’s stories and the wisdom etched into his experience. This artwork not only serves as a tribute to the enduring spirit of mariners but also showcases van der Velden’s exceptional ability to evoke emotion and narrative through his use of monochrome watercolors.

Petrus van der Velden, who is also known as Paulus van der Velden, was a Dutch artist who spent much of his later career in New Zealand.

Petrus van der Velden was born in Rotterdam; his parents were Jacoba van Essel and Joannes van der Velden, a warehouse manager. Petrus began drawing lessons at around the age of 13 and subsequently apprenticed as a lithographer. In 1858 he founded a lithographic printing company in Rotterdam with business partner J. G. Zijderman.
