More about this artwork

We are proud to feature one of Ferdinand Hodler's compelling studies, titled "Study for Day," which he created between 1898 and 1899. This painting radiates a soft tranquility, showcasing Hodler's unique style that blends elements of symbolism and art nouveau with a touch of early expressionism. The artwork captures a single female figure engaged in an intimate, reflective pose. Her body is rendered in smooth, flowing lines that emphasize its form and the movement of muscle beneath skin. The earth-toned palette, dominated by flesh hues and soft pastels, gives the painting a warm and inviting glow, while Hodler's subtle play with light and shadow adds depth and a tender realism to the figure. What truly sets this painting apart are the floral patterns and natural motifs in the background, a likely nod to the theme of rebirth and the daily renewal found in nature. These patterns, combined with the serene pose of the figure, suggest a moment of personal awakening or contemplation, metaphorically aligning the human experience with the natural cycles of day and night."Study for Day" is more than just a visual study; it is a profound expression of human introspection and the profound connection between humanity and the natural world.

Ferdinand Hodler (March 14, 1853 – May 19, 1918) was one of the best-known Swiss painters of the nineteenth century. His early works were portraits, landscapes, and genre paintings in a realistic style. Later, he adopted a personal form of symbolism which he called "parallelism".
