More about this artwork

"Maine Coast, Moonlight" by Frederic Edwin Church, painted between 1845 and 1855, captures a nocturnal scene filled with the subtle interplay of light and texture that characterizes much of Church's work. This oil on canvas landscape depicts a serene and vast ocean under the glow of a soft moonlight, slightly obscured by drifting clouds, which casts a gentle, luminous reflection across the waves. The painting's palette is dominated by deep blues and shadowy blacks, punctuated by the pale moonlight piercing through the night sky. This luminescence not only highlights the rolling waves of the sea but also draws attention to the quiet majesty of nature’s vastness. The contrast between the dark shoreline and the shimmering sea enhances the sense of depth and distance."Maine Coast, Moonlight" is a masterful example of Church's ability to convey atmosphere and mood, inviting observers to experience the calm and contemplation inspired by nature’s nighttime beauty.

Frederic Edwin Church (May 4, 1826 – April 7, 1900) was an American landscape painter born in Hartford, Connecticut. He was a central figure in the Hudson River School of American landscape painters, best known for painting large landscapes, often depicting mountains, waterfalls, and sunsets. Church's paintings put an emphasis on realistic detail, dramatic light, and panoramic views. He debuted some of his major works in single-painting exhibitions to a paying and often enthralled audience in New York City. In his prime, he was one of the most famous painters in the United States.
