More about this artwork

"De muziek," crafted by the distinctive artist Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita in 1878, stands as a compelling example of art that captures the ethereal qualities of music through visual expression. This stunning piece uses starkly contrasting black and white tones to create a mesmerizing depiction of a woman, who is centrally positioned and seems to be an embodiment of music itself. The woman, dressed in a flowing, long gown with graceful accents at the borders, appears almost angelic. Her poised demeanor and uplifted gaze give her an aura of serene contemplation. The background features vertical lines, reminiscent of the strings of a harp, which converge towards the top of the composition, enhancing the feeling of movement and harmony. Her hands are delicately placed near her chest, as if she is either feeling the music within her or about to commence a symphonic performance.Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's talent in using the woodcut technique is evident here, as he masterfully creates texture and depth, despite the limited color palette. "De muziek" not only visually represents the concept of music but also invokes its emotive power, inviting viewers to experience the tranquility and beauty music can offer.
