More about this artwork

"Extensive Landscape With River" is a captivating painting by American Impressionist Childe Hassam, dated 1917. This sweeping landscape invites viewers to traverse a serene, pastoral scene outlined by the meandering flow of a river. Hassam uses a vibrant palette to capture the rich greens of the foliage and the varied blues of the water, adding depth and movement through his masterful use of light and shadow. The river, a central element, bends gracefully through the composition, flanked by clusters of trees and open fields, suggesting the untamed beauty of the American countryside during the early 20th century. The sky, depicted in soft blues and whites, echoes the tranquility and vastness of the scene below, while occasional dabs of warmer yellows and browns in the foreground add a touch of warmth and liveliness. This painting not only showcases Hassam's skill in rendering the natural world but also evokes a sense of peace and timelessness, inviting contemplation and admiration of the simpler, pristine landscapes that are often overshadowed by the modern world.
