More about this artwork

Welcome to a serene vista captured by American Impressionist Childe Hassam in his 1916 painting titled "Back of the Old House." This artwork, executed with the vivid light and loose brushwork characteristic of Hassam's style, offers a glimpse of a moment frozen in time at the backside of a weathered, yet charming, old residence. The painting reveals the intimate details of everyday scenery—the side of an old house painted in soft whites and greys, accented by greens and blues from the surrounding foliage and shadows. Reflecting Hassam's mastery in portraying light, the artwork is bathed in natural sunlight that casts playful shadows across the structure and the unkempt garden. The windows, uneven and slightly ajar, hint at a lived-in warmth, contrasting with the exterior's aging facade.Touches of vibrant colors peek through—the yellow and red of a curtain, the bright green paint on a door frame—amidst more muted tones, suggesting a space that, despite its outwardly timeworn appearance, holds life and stories. The surroundings are lush with unruly plants and shrubs, which seem to almost reclaim the man-made structure back into nature."Back of the Old House" invites viewers to ponder the quiet beauty of the ordinary, encouraging a reflection on the passage of time and the quiet resilience found in everyday settings.
