More about this artwork

"The Balcony" is a striking painting by Edouard Manet, painted between 1868 and 1869. The artwork showcases a vivid scene set on a balcony framed by dark green shutters. The painting features three main figures: two women and a man, alongside the intimation of additional figures reflected obscurely in the background window, suggesting a room inside. The central figure, a woman adorned with a white gown, captures the viewer’s attention with her serene expression. She plays delicately with a fan, and crowning her head is a wreath of flowers, enhancing her ethereal presence. Beside her, to the right, another woman appears engaged in reading a book, her white dress and contemplative gaze contributing to a calm, introspective atmosphere. Between and slightly behind them stands a man in a dark suit and a commanding white tie, whose distinct posture and gaze outward convey a protective or overseeing character. These individuals rest against a railing adorned in green, which echoes the shutters and gives the scene a cohesive splash of color amidst the predominantly white and black attire. At the bottom left of the balcony, Manet introduces a touch of domestic charm in the form of a flower pot, kicks up the everyday realism that defines many of his works."The Balcony", with its intriguing blend of stillness and subtle narrative, stands as an exemplary piece of Manet's work during the late 1860s.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French modernist painter and one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life. His impressionist style is characterized by relatively small and thin brushstrokes that create emphasis on light depiction. Manet was one of the key artists in the transition from realism to impressionism, along with Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. However, he resisted involvement in any one specific style of painting, and only presented his work to the Salon of Paris instead of impressionist exhibitions. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, created great controversy and served as a rallying point for other young painters.
