More about this artwork

The painting "Roses" by French artist Henri Le Sidaner invites viewers into an intimate and enchanting visual experience. Created around 1930, this masterpiece showcases the subtlety and sensitivity Le Sidaner is celebrated for in his exploration of light and shadow. At the center of the composition, a glass vase filled with lush, bloomed roses in shades of pink and touches of deep red stands elegantly. The roses, robust and vivid, seem to capture the essence of a serene moment in full bloom. Each brushstroke contributes to a sense of delicate texturing, giving the petals a vibrantly tactile appearance against the more subdued background. The background is rendered in muted earth tones, which enhances the visual depth and focuses attention on the vibrancy of the flowers. Interestingly, a single rose lies detached near the base of the vase, adding a poignant note of impermanence and isolated beauty.Le Sidaner’s use of dappled light is subtle yet profoundly effective, creating sparkling effects on the glass vase and giving life to the reflective surfaces, further emphasizing the interplay of transparency and opacity."Roses" not only exemplifies Henri Le Sidaner’s mastery over light and color but also reflects his ability to evoke emotion and atmosphere, pulling the viewer into a moment of delicate tranquility.

Henri Eugène Augustin Le Sidaner (7 August 1862 – 14 July 1939) who was a contemporary of the Post-impressionists, was an intimist painter known for his paintings of domestic interiors and quiet street scenes. His style contained elements of impressionism with the influences of Édouard Manet, Monet and of the Pointillists discernible in his work. Le Sidaner favoured a subdued use of colour, preferring nuanced greys and opals applied with uneven, dappled brushstrokes to create atmosphere and mysticism. A skilled nocturne painter, he travelled widely throughout France and Europe before settling at Gerberoy in the Picardy countryside from where he painted for over thirty years.

Le Sidaner's paintings and pastels were widely collected throughout his career. His seductive views of the gardens he created in the ruins of the medieval fortress at Gerberoy, with their recently vacated tables dappled in sunlight and overhung by roses, have cemented his reputation as a unique artist who does not fit easily into an art movement.
