More about this artwork

"Princess Mary, Daughter of Charles I" is an exquisite portrait by the renowned artist Anthony van Dyck, painted around 1637. This artwork captures Princess Mary, the eldest daughter of King Charles I of England, standing gracefully in an elegant pose that reflects her royal status. At a young age, she exhibits a serene composure and regality, indicative of her important role within the royal family. The painting itself is a showcase of Van Dyck's mastery in portraying texture and fabric. Princess Mary is dressed in a stunning, silvery-blue gown that is richly ornamented with delicate lace and embroidery, illustrating the luxurious fashions of the 17th-century English court. The gown's intricate details and the shimmering quality of the fabric are rendered with exceptional skill, highlighting Van Dyck’s ability to convey opulence through his brushwork.Princess Mary’s demeanor and expression are composed and slightly reserved, with her hands delicately clasped in front of her. Her hair is styled elegantly with pearls, which also adorn her neckline, adding a gentle contrast to the softness of her youthful face.To her right, a richly decorated gold curtain drapes next to a classical column, setting a regal backdrop that complements her aristocratic bearing. Beneath her, a sumptuous red carpet further emphasizes her royal lineage and the luxury befitting a princess.

Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in the Spanish Netherlands and Italy.

The seventh child of Frans van Dyck, a wealthy Antwerp silk merchant, Anthony painted from an early age. He was successful as an independent painter in his late teens, and became a master in the Antwerp guild in 1618. By this time he was working in the studio of the leading northern painter of the day, Peter Paul Rubens, who became a major influence on his work.
