More about this artwork

Joseph Wopfner's "Fischer am Chiemseeufer" skillfully captures a serene moment along the shores of Lake Chiemsee. Painted in 1900, this artwork exudes the tranquil essence of a day by the water, where the sky and lake meet in a harmony of blues and soft whites. The painting depicts three figures — two men and a woman — engaged in what appears to be a casual yet poignant interaction by a small boat. The woman, dressed in a red skirt and white headscarf, stands out vividly against the muted tones of the landscape, adding a splash of color that draws the eye.In the background, the sweeping expanse of the calm Chiemsee stretches towards distant mountains, suggesting the vastness of nature and the peaceful solitude it offers. Wopfner's brushwork wonderfully captures the reflections on the water and the dynamic yet soothing sky, creating a scene that is both grounding and uplifting. This painting not only showcases Wopfner's mastery over color and composition but also evokes a timeless connection to the simple pleasures of life by the water's edge. As viewers, we are invited to pause and immerse ourselves in the calm and beauty of this lakeside moment, appreciating the subtle interplay of light, color, and human interaction.

Joseph Wopfner was an Austrian painter best known for his depictions of landscapes in the Chiemgau region of Bavaria. His vividly colored paintings, reminiscent work of the Impressionists, were based off of plein-air studies the artist made on location. As a result, there is strong sense of movement and light in the artist’s work. For example, in his painting Fishermen's family on the Chiemsee, he painted a family wading in a lake—emphasizing the light filling the sky and the reflectivity of the water.
