More about this artwork

"Luncheon on the Grass" ("Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe"), painted by Édouard Manet in 1863, is a provocative masterpiece that continues to captivate art lovers worldwide. Exhibited in the Salon des Refusés, it sparked controversy and discussions that have transcended time. The painting depicts a scene in a lush, sun-flecked forest where two fully dressed gentlemen are seated casually on the grass, partaking in a leisurely picnic. The striking aspect of this composition is the presence of a nude woman sitting next to them, unabashedly engaging in conversation. A second woman, dressed in a light gown, can be seen bathing in a stream in the background, adding to the unconventional tableau. The stark contrast between the clothed men and the naked woman challenges social norms and traditional representations of nude figures in art, primarily reserved for mythological contexts. The realism of the scene, devoid of any mythological pretense, defied the artistic standards of the time.Manet's brushwork is loose and expressive, lending an almost unfinished quality to the surroundings, which focuses the viewer’s attention more on the subjects and the social commentary. The assorted items of the picnic—fruit, bread, and wine—scatter in the foreground, enhancing the casual, everyday nature of the setting."Luncheon on the Grass" is more than just a depiction of a moment in nature; it is a bold critique of societal norms, an exploration of human relationships, and a modern approach to subject matter and technique that heralded the birth of modern art.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French modernist painter and one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life. His impressionist style is characterized by relatively small and thin brushstrokes that create emphasis on light depiction. Manet was one of the key artists in the transition from realism to impressionism, along with Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. However, he resisted involvement in any one specific style of painting, and only presented his work to the Salon of Paris instead of impressionist exhibitions. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, created great controversy and served as a rallying point for other young painters.
