More about this artwork

George Morland, an artist renowned for his adeptness in capturing rural scenes and animal studies, brings his focused attention to a beloved subject in his artwork titled "Head of a Hound". This delicate drawing showcases Morland's refined skill in portraying the subtle details and character of a hound through gentle pencil strokes. In this piece, the viewer is immediately drawn to the expressive gaze of the hound, depicted with remarkable realism. The hound’s face is turned slightly to the side, allowing Morland to intricately capture the nuances of its visage—from the deep, thoughtful eyes to the soft fur texture that seems almost tactile. The shading around the hound’s features enhances the depth and gentle contours of its face, suggesting not only the physical form but also a glimpse into the serene, perhaps contemplative nature of the animal."Head of a Hound" exemplifies Morland’s talent for conveying not just an animal’s appearance but its demeanor and essence.

George Morland (26 June 1763 – 29 October 1804) was an English painter. His early work was influenced by Francis Wheatley, but after the 1790s he came into his own style. His best compositions focus on rustic scenes: farms and hunting; smugglers and gypsies; and rich, textured landscapes informed by Dutch Golden Age painting.
