More about this artwork

Immerse yourself in the gentle elegance of George Morland's painting, "A Woman Called Anne, the Artist’s Wife", created circa 1795. This captivating work immortalizes Morland’s wife, Anne, depicted in an intimate, serene setting that offers warmth and simplicity. Anne is seated comfortably in a softly upholstered armchair, her attire a vision of late 18th-century fashion with its fluid lines and delicate, pastel tones. Her expression is one of engaged curiosity as she seems to pause mid-activity, holding a piece of paper that might be a letter or a reading material. The atmosphere conveyed through muted tones and a masterful use of light underscores a mood of quietude and domestic tranquility. The furnishings around Anne—the striped armchair, the draped curtain, and the small, quaint table holding what appears to be a tea service—add layers of texture and interest, suggesting her roles both in her household and within Morland’s heart.Reflecting on this portrait, viewers are invited not only to appreciate the aesthetic and emotional depth of Morland’s art but also to glimpse into the personal life of the artist through the tender portrayal of his wife. As such, this painting stands not only as a significant artistic creation but also as a poignant personal document from Morland’s life.

George Morland (26 June 1763 – 29 October 1804) was an English painter. His early work was influenced by Francis Wheatley, but after the 1790s he came into his own style. His best compositions focus on rustic scenes: farms and hunting; smugglers and gypsies; and rich, textured landscapes informed by Dutch Golden Age painting.
