More about this artwork

"The Drawing Lesson," crafted by the distinguished Impressionist artist Berthe Morisot between 1888 and 1890, is a captivating etching that delves into the quiet intimacy of a mother and her child engrossed in an art lesson. This sensitive, finely executed piece is both tender and expressive, exemplifying Morisot's skill in portraying domestic life and personal moments. In the etching, we observe a young girl, seated closely next to her mother on a plush sofa. The child, absorbed in concentration, holds a drawing board upon her lap, suggesting she is practicing her sketches under her mother’s gentle guidance. The mother, a figure of calm and supportive presence, leans in slightly, peering over the drawing board to observe her daughter’s work. Her expression, one of serene attentiveness, underscores her dedication and affection. The setting is subtly detailed, with light sketches of the surrounding room hinting at a comfortable, lived-in space. A cushion propped against the sofa adds to the cozy atmosphere, making it clear that this scene is set in a private domestic sphere, a typical focus of Morisot. The soft lines and delicate shading of Morisot’s etching technique enliven the textures of the subjects' clothing and the furnishings, emphasizing the warmth of the scene. This artwork is not just an exploration of the bond between mother and daughter but also a reflection on education and the passing down of skills from one generation to the next. "The Drawing Lesson" stands out as a poignant example of Berthe Morisot's profound ability to capture the essence of female inner life and the beauty of everyday moments.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
