More about this artwork

The evocative piece titled "Abend" created around 1924 by artist Karl Wiener captivates viewers with its serene portrayal of twilight cascading over a mountainous landscape. This artwork is a testament to Wiener's mastery in using pastels, reflecting the subtle interplay of light and shadow that characterizes the end of the day. The painting presents a series of undulating hills and valleys, nuanced with a textural depth that suggests the ruggedness of the terrain. Above, the sky transitions from a deep twilight blue to gentle hues of pink and peach, suggesting the quiet glow of sunset. The remarkable use of color and texture not only emphasizes the vastness and tranquility of the natural world but also evokes a deep sense of calm and contemplation.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
