More about this artwork

In this evocative still life painting titled "Nature Morte," artist Henri Le Sidaner presents a serene and intimate scene that captures the quiet beauty of everyday objects. Painted in 1917, this artwork features a meticulously arranged tableau of a sugar bowl, a green teapot, a dark metallic coffee pot, a delicate glass of wine, and a teacup perched on a matching saucer. Each piece, rendered with Le Sidaner’s soft and gentle brush strokes, sits atop a textured tablecloth that adds depth and interest to the composition. The artist’s use of light plays a pivotal role in this work, where the vertical striations in the background suggest a curtain or a textured wall, bathing the entire scene in an ethereal glow. The light not only highlights the translucency of the wine glass and emphasizes the reflective surfaces of the teapot and coffee pot, but also enhances the overall ambience of quiet reflection. The subtle interplay of colors, ranging from the ochres and yellows of the bottle to the cool greys and blues of the teapot, creates a harmonious palette that is both calming and inviting. This painting by Henri Le Sidaner, an artist celebrated for his skillful handling of light and texture, offers viewers a moment of peace, inviting them to ponder the simple elegance of ordinary moments captured in time.

Henri Eugène Augustin Le Sidaner (7 August 1862 – 14 July 1939) who was a contemporary of the Post-impressionists, was an intimist painter known for his paintings of domestic interiors and quiet street scenes. His style contained elements of impressionism with the influences of Édouard Manet, Monet and of the Pointillists discernible in his work. Le Sidaner favoured a subdued use of colour, preferring nuanced greys and opals applied with uneven, dappled brushstrokes to create atmosphere and mysticism. A skilled nocturne painter, he travelled widely throughout France and Europe before settling at Gerberoy in the Picardy countryside from where he painted for over thirty years.

Le Sidaner's paintings and pastels were widely collected throughout his career. His seductive views of the gardens he created in the ruins of the medieval fortress at Gerberoy, with their recently vacated tables dappled in sunlight and overhung by roses, have cemented his reputation as a unique artist who does not fit easily into an art movement.
