More about this artwork

"Schets voor Panis Angelicus" (1898) by Jan Toorop is a compelling artwork that transports viewers into a world blending religious reverence with a distinctive artistic style. The work, a study for a larger piece, elegantly portrays a female figure bathed in a radiant light that seems to emanate from above, symbolizing a divine presence. The woman, depicted with an otherworldly aura, gazes upwards with a look of intense devotion, as if in a moment of spiritual ecstasy or prayer. Her flowing, textured hair and the detailed, draped garment she wears add a tactile dimension to the drawing, suggesting movement and a gentle grace. Toorop’s use of swirling lines and a monochrome palette enhances the mystical and ethereal quality of the scene, drawing the viewer's eye towards the luminous halo surrounding her head, which suggests sanctity and purity. In the background, we notice a solid, dark structure that contrasts with the soft, illuminated form of the woman, adding depth and a sense of dimension to the composition. This juxtaposition emphasizes the spiritual theme of the work, possibly alluding to the earthly bound against the heavenly transcendental.Jan Toorop’s "Schets voor Panis Angelicus" is a spiritual exploration in pencil, revealing not only the artist’s mastery of form and texture but also his profound sensitivity to the unseen, spiritual realms.

Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was a 19-century Dutch-Javanese painter who extensively experimented with different artistic styles ranging from Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau to Pointillism. He was famous for using highly stylized slim figures and dynamic lines that were influenced by Indonesian motifs and curvilinear lines. His most famous poster artwork “Delft Salad Oil”, commissioned by The Dutch Oil Company, became so iconic that the Dutch Art Nouveau painting style is given the nickname "the salad oil style". Despite the fact that Toorop's expertise was in producing designs for marketing and advertisements, he also produced a number of fine art pieces that dealt with darker subjects including the human physche and emotions.
