On the left, a young boy, presumably Iskander Bey, is dressed in an elaborate red and gold outfit, complete with a fez. Seated comfortably on an ornate sofa adorned with intricate patterns, he exudes an air of youthful authority. His expression is pensive and his gaze direct, suggesting a demeanor well beyond his years.Standing to his right, his servant is portrayed in a striking red robe, holding a peacock feather fan, an emblem of service and loyalty. The servant's posture is upright, showcasing respect and attentiveness towards the young boy. His expression is calm and collected, portraying a sense of duty and reverence. The background of the painting is just as detailed, featuring Arabic script in a gold ornamental frieze, highlighting Lewis's attention to detail and his commitment to representing the cultural essence of the East, as seen through his experiences and imagination. This painting not only showcases Lewis's skill with a brush but also reflects the fascination with Oriental culture prevalent among European artists during this period.

John Frederick Lewis was an English Orientalist painter. He specialized in Oriental and Mediterranean scenes in detailed watercolour or oils, very often repeating the same composition in a version in each medium. He lived for several years in a traditional mansion in Cairo, and after his return to England in 1851 he specialized in highly detailed works showing both realistic genre scenes of Middle Eastern life and more idealized scenes in upper class Egyptian interiors with little apparent Western influence.
