More about this artwork

Albert Edelfelt's painting, "Good Friends I (Berta and Capi)" from 1881, warmly captures a serene and intimate moment between a young girl and her loyal companion, a fluffy white dog. The scene is painted with gentle, natural light filtering through a window, highlighting the softness of an idle afternoon and the calm comfort of reading. The young girl, Berta, is depicted in a flowing pink dress with frills, absorbed in a red book, her attention entirely entangled in its pages. The contrast of her vivid red stockings draws attention to her relaxed pose sprawled on a laid-back daybed. Beside her, Capi, her attentive dog, shares this quiet moment, contributing to the painting's overall sense of companionship and tranquility. The painting is set against a background that opens to a lush garden, suggesting a close connection with nature and the peacefulness of domestic life. The room is filled with details that tell of comfort and a lived-in space, like the casually knocked-over doll and slippers near the daybed.Albert Edelfelt, in this work, not only showcases his skill in creating lifelike textures and light but also his ability to evoke emotion and narrative through the simple yet poignant interaction between a girl and her dog.
