More about this artwork

"Explore an evocative piece of expressionist art by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, titled *Tochter Sternheim* (1916). This compelling woodcut print presents a haunting portrait, characterized by its stark lines and dramatic contrasts that are typical of Kirchner's intense style. The figure portrayed, possibly a character interpretation or symbolic representation, dominates the composition with a striking, sharp profile. The depth of emotion is captured through the exaggerated features and deep set eyes, conveying a sense of introspection or solemnity. In the background, intriguing abstract shapes and simplistic figures appear, adding a narrative element or possibly commenting on the social context of the era. Kirchner’s use of bold, black strokes against the stark whiteness enhances the emotional gravity of the image, pulling viewers into a reflective dialogue with the subject.*Tochter Sternheim* is a prime example of Kirchner's artistic exploration of human emotion and the psychological depth, rendered through the expressive potential of woodcut technique.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
