More about this artwork

In this enthralling painting titled "Felsenküste und ruhiges Meer" (Rocky Coast and Calm Sea), artist Ernst Schiess captures the serene beauty of a tranquil seascape. The viewer is presented with a panoramic view of a calm sea that stretches out beneath a dynamic sky. The harmonious interplay of blue and green hues in the water conveys a sense of deep peace and stillness, while the textured brush strokes suggest gentle movements of the ocean waves.Dominating the composition are the imposing, rugged cliffs on the shoreline. Painted in rich earth tones with highlights of white where the sea brushes against them, these cliffs serve as a powerful contrast to the expansive and soothing sea. Ernst Schiess’s choice of a subdued palette and the bold, impressionistic application of paint create a dynamic yet soothing atmosphere.
