More about this artwork

"Table After The Meal" (1914) is a captivating example of Ernst Schiess's talent in capturing the serene aftermath of a shared meal. The painting delicately portrays an assortment of items scattered across a tablecloth, illustrating the remains of a meal enjoyed. The array includes a richly decorated blue teapot, a partially hidden brown coffeepot, and a variety of bottles—some clear, perhaps holding water, and others possibly containing wine or spirits. A dish near the center shows remnants of food, surrounded by plates that still bear traces of sauces and crumbs, suggesting the flavors and conversations that might have recently taken place. A cluster of fruit and a glass with a lemon slice remind the viewer of the simple, fresh finish to the meal. Schiess's use of light and texture enhances the intimate, casual setting, inviting viewers to reflect on the comforting, communal experience of dining with others.
