More about this artwork

The portrait "Mijn zoon (Jaap Jessurun de Mesquita)" created in 1915 by Dutch artist Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, captures the keen essence of personal and emotive artistry. This striking work features the artist’s son, Jaap, depicted in a bold, graphic style that is characteristic of De Mesquita's approach to printmaking. In this image, the viewer's attention is immediately drawn to Jaap's expressive face. His eyes, framed by round glasses, evoke a sense of introspection and a hint of youthful curiosity. The details are rendered with precision and clarity, revealing his distinct facial features that speak volumes about his personality and perhaps his mood at the time.Jessurun de Mesquita has masterfully used the technique of black and white contrast to outline Jaap’s features, which are accentuated by the patterned shading of his clothing and the textured background. The cap, slightly shading his eyes, adds a personal touch, deepening the representation of his individuality and the style of the era. This portrait is not merely a representation of a young boy but a deeply personal snapshot of an artist’s relation to his surroundings and loved ones, embodied in the form of his son.
