More about this artwork

Welcome to a visual journey into the introspective and emotive world of Pierre Bonnard, as captured in the remarkable painting "Portrait de jeune fille (étude)" from 1921. This stunning artwork offers a glimpse into Bonnard's unique approach to portraiture, where he combines vibrant color schemes with profound psychological insight. In this painting, we encounter the image of a young girl, her gaze subtle yet penetrating, suggesting a contemplative state of mind. The delicate rendering of her features is achieved through a series of textured brushstrokes, where the earthy tones meld with hints of gold and amber, capturing the play of light on her face and attire. Bonnard’s expert use of color not only accentuates the physical appearance of the young girl but also evokes her inner life and mood. The background, crafted with a rich, warm palette of reds infuses the portrait with an intensity that both contrasts with and complements the softer, more subdued colors of her figure. This interplay of hue and saturation adds a dynamic element to the scene, mirroring perhaps the complexity of the subject’s thoughts."Portrait de jeune fille (étude)" is not merely a depiction but a dialogue between the artist and his subject, showcasing Bonnard's constant experimentation with light, color, and expression. Visitors are invited to delve into this thoughtful portrayal and appreciate a moment captured in time, where emotion and elegance gracefully intertwine.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
