More about this artwork

Welcome to our exploration of "Ex libris van JFN" (1910), a captivating artwork by the renowned Dutch artist Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. This piece beautifully showcases De Mesquita's intricate and distinct style, focusing on elaborate, symbolic designs. The artwork serves as an ex libris, a bookplate used to indicate ownership, specifically for someone with the initials JFN. Central to the composition is a mesmerizing, wheel-like structure featuring concentric circles and decorative motifs radiating outward. This central motif may represent something deeply personal or symbolic to the owner of the bookplate, perhaps signifying knowledge, eternity, or the cyclical nature of life.Encircling the main design are various geometric shapes and symbols, including stylized letters that likely represent the owner's initials—J, F, and N—rendered in an abstract form. The inclusion of these initials not only personalizes the artwork but also integrates the owner’s identity with the thematic elements of the design.Jessurin de Mesquita's use of stark black and white enhances the visual impact of the piece, with the contrasting colors drawing attention to the details and the precision of the linework. Overall, this ex libris is not only a functional object but also a profound work of art, reflecting the owner’s intellectual and aesthetic tastes.
