More about this artwork

Welcome to a visual journey through Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita’s captivating work, "Jonge vrouw voor driehoek" (Young Woman Before Triangle). Created in 1929, this artwork presents an elegant synthesis of graphic art and symbolic expression.Centering on an arresting figure, the piece features a young woman poised serenely against a backdrop of a large, imposing triangle. Her gaze is direct and seems contemplative, adding to the introspective ambiance of the image. The triangle, framing her figure, not only highlights her but also integrates elements of geometric abstraction – a style somewhat contemporary to de Mesquita’s era. The radial lines emanating from her silhouette create a dynamic contrast with the stark simplicity of the triangle's edges and the circular motifs that punctuate the composition. The use of a minimal color palette emphasizes the strong graphic quality of de Mesquita's printmaking technique. The lines are clean and purposeful, the forms distilled to their essence. Each element, from the studded circles to her subtly detailed attire, contributes to a portrait that is as much about the individual character of the young woman as it is about exploring broader themes of human presence within abstract symbolic contexts."Jonge vrouw voor driehoek" is not just a study of a person, but a discourse on the relationship between humanity and the shapes and symbols that permeate our cultural and artistic languages. This artwork invites viewers to contemplate the power of simplicity in conveying complex ideas about identity and existence.
