More about this artwork

Titled and painted by the celebrated Dutch artist Jozef Israëls, this artwork beautifully encapsulates the everyday life and intimate moments of the working class in the 19th century. The scene takes place on the steps inside a weathered building, where a young fisherman sits enjoying his meal. The boy's attire is simple and worn, a testament to the humble life of a fisherman, characterized by his bare feet and the plain, practical clothes that hang loosely on his frame. The painting provides a window into the moment of solace in the boy's otherwise physically demanding day. He is depicted eating bread, a basic yet vital sustenance, reflecting the modest means of his lifestyle. Next to him rests a bucket and a rudimentary fishing rod, tools of his trade, reinforcing his identity connected to the sea. The backdrop features faintly rendered architectural details, suggesting a quiet and somewhat neglected setting that complements the serene yet somber mood of the moment.Israëls, known for his ability to capture the poignancy of peasant life, uses a soft palette and skillful shading to focus on the expression of the young boy, which is reflective and mildly solemn. The atmosphere of the painting is reflective of the hardships faced by many during this era, yet also offers a sense of dignity and peace found in the simplicity of the boy's mealtime.

Jozef Israëls was a Dutch painter. He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".

He was born in Groningen, of Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, intended for him to be a businessman, and it was only after a determined struggle that he was allowed to embark on an artistic career. He studied initially from 1835 to 1842 at the Minerva Academy in his home town Groningen.
