More about this artwork

George Morland's enchanting 1788 painting, "Children Fishing," offers a captivating glimpse into rural childhood joys and tasks from centuries past. This artwork elegantly portrays a serene and playful scene by the water's edge, where a group of children engages in the age-old pastime of fishing.Set against a lush backdrop filled with rich foliage and a tranquil pond, the painting shows a group of five children in a picturesque natural setting. On the left, a young boy in a green outfit and a large hat attentively handles a fishing pole, his gaze concentrated on the waters. Behind him, another child energetically uses a stick, perhaps to assist in the fishing endeavor or to play. The foreground is occupied by three younger children, who seem more absorbed in play than in fishing. The central figure, a little girl with curly hair, holds a small fish up in the air, her face alight with the thrill of her catch. She is flanked by another girl and a boy who are comfortably sprawled on lush greenery, indicating the carefree and leisurely nature of their day."Children Fishing" is not just a depiction of playful leisure, however; it also subtly communicates the connection between the children and their environment, a theme often revisited by Morland. The children, dressed in period-appropriate attire, blend harmoniously with the calm and nurturing surroundings, suggesting a peaceful coexistence and a shared joy in nature's offerings. This painting by George Morland is a beautiful reflection on childhood innocence, the simplicity of pastimes before the advent of modern distractions, and the timeless beauty of nature as a backdrop for human activity.

George Morland (26 June 1763 – 29 October 1804) was an English painter. His early work was influenced by Francis Wheatley, but after the 1790s he came into his own style. His best compositions focus on rustic scenes: farms and hunting; smugglers and gypsies; and rich, textured landscapes informed by Dutch Golden Age painting.
