More about this artwork

Welcome to an enchanting view of the "On the Conway River, North Wales," a vibrant watercolor painting by the distinguished artist David Cox. Captured in the mid-19th century, this piece embodies the raw beauty of the Welsh landscape, a theme prevalent in Cox’s work, known for his skillful portrayal of nature’s temperaments. The painting invites us into a serene, yet invigorating riverscape, at what seems to be either dawn or dusk, the fleeting light gently illuminating the craggy hills in the distance. The viewer’s eye is naturally drawn to the tranquil flow of the Conway River, its surface gently interrupted by shimmering reflections and subtle ripples. Juxtaposed against this peaceful waterway are the dramatic, densely wooded banks, adding a lush vibrancy to the scene. In the foreground, a small hillock dotted with wind-swept trees, possibly birches, anchors the composition. These trees, contorted by the winds and weather, lend a sense of enduring resilience to the painting. Slightly muted, earthy tones dominate, reflecting the tranquil and somewhat solitary nature of the Welsh countryside, yet bright streaks of light suggest a dynamic sky, possibly foretelling a change in weather. The watercolor technique employed by Cox allows for a masterful gradient of textures and hues, showing his adept handling of the medium. Thin, almost translucent washes in the sky contrast dramatically with the darker, detailed strokes of the foreground and middleground, creating a compelling depth and realism.“On the Conway River, North Wales” is not just a visual retreat but also a testament to David Cox's profound connection with the natural world, capturing its essence in a way that invites contemplation and admiration.

David Cox (29 April 1783 – 7 June 1859) was an English landscape painter, one of the most important members of the Birmingham School of landscape artists and an early precursor of Impressionism.

He is considered one of the greatest English landscape painters, and a major figure of the Golden age of English watercolour.

Although most popularly known for his works in watercolour, he also painted over 300 works in oil towards the end of his career, now considered "one of the greatest, but least recognised, achievements of any British painter."

His son, known as David Cox the Younger (1809–1885), was also a successful artist.
