More about this artwork
Artist: Gustave Doré Year: 1881Gustave Doré's from 1881 captivates viewers with its towering and dynamic landscape. This impressive painting offers a majestic view of mountainous terrain under a turbulent sky. At the lower part of the canvas, a rugged, verdant hillside hosts a scattering of goats, symbolizing the harmonious existence of nature and wildlife. The goats are grouped casually, busily grazing, mostly oblivious to the towering peaks above. The artist masterfully captures the rough textures of the rocks and the soft, lush greenery of the grass, providing a stark contrast to the peaceful vista of a distant lake seen nestling between the hills in the background. This serene water body is flanked by sunlit mountain ridges, creating a focal point that draws the eye through the composition. The sky, a dramatic and perhaps the most expressive element in the painting, depicts shifting clouds that suggest an approaching storm or the end of one, affecting the play of light and shadow across the landscape, thereby enhancing the overall moody atmosphere of the scene.Doré’s artistic technique involves robust brushstrokes and a rich palette to emphasize the rugged beauty and innate grandeur of the mountain landscape, making a stirring depiction of nature’s power and tranquility.

Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (6 January 1832 – 23 January 1883) was a French printmaker, illustrator, painter, comics artist, caricaturist, and sculptor. He is best known for his prolific output of wood-engravings illustrating classic literature, especially those for the Vulgate Bible and Dante's Divine Comedy. These achieved great international success, and he became renowned for printmaking, although his role was normally as the designer only; at the height of his career some 40 block-cutters were employed to cut his drawings onto the wooden printing blocks, usually also signing the image.
