More about this artwork
Gustave Doré, a master of dramatic artistry, vividly captures the historical tragedy in his painting titled "Fire of Rome." This profound piece depicts the chaos and emotional turmoil experienced by the Romans as their city burns in the background. The scene is set at night, illuminated only by the fierce flames that engulf the city, casting a haunting glow over the occupants of a small boat.In the foreground of the painting, Doré skillfully portrays a group of distressed Romans making a desperate escape via the Tiber River. The composition is dense and filled with action; men, women, and children are crowded into the boat, suggesting the urgent scramble for survival. A woman in a green shawl stands out amongst the panic, her expression one of profound sorrow and disbelief, reinforcing the painting’s emotional depth.Doré's use of dark, muted colors conveys the somberness of the scene, while precise brushstrokes capture the reflection of firelight on water and the textured drapery of the cloths. The overall tone of the painting is one of urgency and despair, paying tribute to the dramatic impact of this catastrophic event on the city’s history."Fire of Rome" not only showcases Doré’s skill as a painter but also serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of fire and the resilience of the human spirit in times of crisis.

Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (6 January 1832 – 23 January 1883) was a French printmaker, illustrator, painter, comics artist, caricaturist, and sculptor. He is best known for his prolific output of wood-engravings illustrating classic literature, especially those for the Vulgate Bible and Dante's Divine Comedy. These achieved great international success, and he became renowned for printmaking, although his role was normally as the designer only; at the height of his career some 40 block-cutters were employed to cut his drawings onto the wooden printing blocks, usually also signing the image.
