More about this artwork

Welcome to a glimpse of "Kinderen op het duin – Landschap bij Brussel" (Children on the Dunes – Landscape near Brussels), a remarkable oil painting by Dutch impressionist Jan Toorop from 1884. This artwork is a serene representation of children engaging casually on sprawling dunes under a dramatic and expansive sky.The palette is rich with natural hues; the greens and browns of the earth contrast beautifully against the soft pastel blues and whites of the cloudy sky. This contrast not only emphasizes the vastness of the sky above but also the organic, rolling contours of the dunes below. In the foreground, a few children are depicted sitting and playing, their forms rendered with a blend of impressionistic and realistic strokes, creating a lively and dynamic scene. The distant backdrop features subtly painted architecture, suggesting the proximity to Brussels, and hints at human habitation amidst a largely tranquil nature scene. The scattered trees and foliage provide a textured curtain to the horizon, adding depth and complexity to the scene.Jan Toorop's technique here is quintessentially impressionistic, focusing on light and movement rather than on clear, sharp lines. Every brushstroke contributes to a sense of the fleeting moment, capturing the essence of youthful innocence and the timeless beauty of nature.

Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was a 19-century Dutch-Javanese painter who extensively experimented with different artistic styles ranging from Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau to Pointillism. He was famous for using highly stylized slim figures and dynamic lines that were influenced by Indonesian motifs and curvilinear lines. His most famous poster artwork “Delft Salad Oil”, commissioned by The Dutch Oil Company, became so iconic that the Dutch Art Nouveau painting style is given the nickname "the salad oil style". Despite the fact that Toorop's expertise was in producing designs for marketing and advertisements, he also produced a number of fine art pieces that dealt with darker subjects including the human physche and emotions.
