More about this artwork

Ernst Schiess's "Self-Portrait III" from 1919 is a compelling work that showcases the artist's introspective gaze and nuanced brushwork. In the foreground of the painting, Schiess's figure is the dominant presence, drawing attention with his keen, discerning eyes and a large, shadowing hat circumscribing his head. The artist’s face, depicted with textured strokes of earthy and warm tones, exudes a sense of rugged individuality and introspective depth.Uniquely integrated into the self-portrait are additional, smaller scenes, rendered in a softer palette, that unfold in the background and give the work layers of narrative depth. To the left, a serene domestic scene features two women—one seated and the other standing by a bed, suggesting a quiet, intimate moment. Directly opposed in the background from this tranquil domesticity is a vibrant outdoor scene featuring figures adorned in bright, flowing robes against a sparse landscape. Each backdrop scene contrasts with the other and with the central figure, creating a dynamic interplay. This juxtaposition might reflect different aspects or influences in Schiess's life, symbolizing the personal and the professional, the internal and the external, the serene and the lively.Ernst Schiess’s "Self-Portrait III" is more than just a self-representation; it is a rich, multi-layered composition that invites viewers to delve into the psychological and emotional landscape of the artist.
